ADSIS (Alternative Delivery of Specialized Instructional Services) is a program designed to provide instruction to assist students who need additional academic (reading and math) or behavioral support to succeed in the general education environment. The goal is to reduce the number of referrals to special education by providing support early to struggling students.

If qualified for ADISIS services, an interventionist will provide scientific, research based reading, math, or behavior interventions to the students in addition to the core curriculum received in their general education classroom. The student’s progress will be monitored and data based decisions will be made regarding the interventions used. Student progress will be shared with classroom teachers and families.

The ADSIS services provided at Delano Elementary School include reading, math, and behavior. The goal is to reduce the number of referrals to special education by providing support early to struggling students.

Assessments are done each fall, winter, and spring. The data is evaluated and if a student is assessed below the school defined standard and does not have an IEP, they will be eligible for receiving ADSIS services. If qualified for services, staff will contact parents or guardians.

There are two ways a student will exit the program. If through the results of progress monitoring and assessments a student is meeting expectations, they will exit the ADSIS program. Parents/Guardians will receive notification that their child is exiting ADSIS. The student may still qualify for Title 1 or Basic skills based on their progress. The second way a student exits ADSIS is if they receive an IEP. If a student with an IEP has academic and/or behavioral needs, the IEP team should review the current evaluation report to determine that all of the educational needs of the student are identified and addressed through the IEP, not ADSIS.

The goal of ADSIS is to help students reach academic and/or behavioral grade level expectations by providing supports early to students who need extra support.  ADSIS supports students who are not on an IEP but are at the highest risk of not meeting grade level expectations based on assessments. Students who are at high risk or some risk may qualify for Title I / Basic Skills. As a student progresses toward grade level standards, they may exit ADSIS, but still qualify for support from Title I / Basic Skills programs.

ADSIS student progress is monitored closely on a weekly or biweekly basis.

If the intervention team determines that student progress is less than expected over six to eight weeks, the intervention will be modified in frequency, duration, and/or instructional method. If the student’s progress continues to be insufficient over the next six to eight weeks, he/she may be referred by our Student Success Team for a special education evaluation.

Parents/Guardians are notified by written communication upon qualifying and exiting ADSIS. As a parent/guardian of an ADSIS student you will receive updates on your child’s progress through email, phone call, or a note home. Parents/Guardians may also choose to schedule a conference during our conference days. You are always welcome to contact us to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.

Parents play an important role in supporting their child’s success. Asking your child questions and discussing what they are doing in ADSIS and in the classroom will show your child you care about their progress. It also helps them understand how important their progress is to you.

Depending on the type of intervention your child is receiving, he/she may bring a book home to read to you. (The book will have ADSIS written on the cover. And must be returned the next day.) This read will be for practice purposes. It should be fairly easy for your child to read because he/she will have already read it with the ADSIS instructor at least once. In some cases, when the book is easy for them, they may have memorized the story. Still, ensure that they are reading the words rather than reciting them, as this will help their brain store those words in long term memory and be able to read them again when found in another context. This would be a good time to have them work on reading fluently, so that it sounds like how we talk -- with appropriate expression and tending to punctuation.

A student with an IEP cannot receive ADSIS services in addition to special education services. Students eligible for ADSIS are general education students who need additional academic or behavioral support to succeed in the general education environment. ADSIS programs provide prevention services as an alternative to special education. ADSIS is for students who may eventually qualify for special education and related services if ADSIS was not available. If a student with an IEP has academic and/or behavioral needs, the IEP team should review the current evaluation report to determine that all of the educational needs of the student are identified and addressed through the IEP, not ADSIS.

ADSIS provides additional academic or behavioral support to the core instruction in the general education classroom. Therefore, we do everything we can to ensure that your child will be pulled outside of core instructional time.
